Fostering Academic
Self-Reliance in Nigeria

Empowering Nigerian academia with Open Access Books

The Challenge

Nigerian universities grapple with a scarcity of locally-authored, openly accessible academic materials. This hinders education quality, limits dissemination, and prioritizes print over digital access.

The Shift

This project strategically positions Nigerian academia in the global Open Access Book movement, ensuring Nigerian research becomes discoverable, accessible, and impactful on a global scale.

A New Approach

The Academic Publishing Centre (APC) at FUTMinna has launched an initiative to enable Nigerian academics to produce high-quality open access (OA) books using Ketty, an open-source book publishing tool. The project empowers scholars to write, produce, and distribute OA books sustainably.

Benefits

Increased Access

Locally relevant academic content becomes widely accessible.

Education Quality

Empowers academics and improves learning resources.

Global Recognition

Nigerian research contributes to global academic knowledge.

Sustainability

Builds a long-term open access ecosystem for publishing.

Stakeholders

  • APC at FUTMinna: Project proposers and editorial supporters.
  • Datasphir: Digital service providers deploying Ketty.
  • Coko Foundation: Developers of the Ketty platform.
  • WACREN: Advocates through LIBSENSE initiative.

Expected Outcomes

  • Publish a set number of high-quality OA books.
  • Showcase books online through FUTMinna's digital APC outlet.
  • Train authors, editors, and publishers to use the platform.
  • Develop sustainability and support networks.
